![]() ![]() Spelling and grammar mistakes, repeated sentences, and an over-reliance on the few words in Grillo's vocabulary mar what could have been only a terrible book in the right hands. I am convinced Tyran Grillo was given the job of translating Parasite Eve on a Monday, and told to have it done later that Monday. Kids, let me tell you about the time I performed an emergency tracheotomy on your aunt Robin. There is a sequel to this book out there, but I will be staying far away and I recommend you do the same. You will surprise even yourself with how adeptly you perform unexpected kidney transplants. Whether you like it or not, by the time you are finished reading Parasite Eve you are legally a practicing physician. But that's far more exciting than the aforementioned medical terminology being vomited out for pages on end. Not unlike the white wall.Īnd it just goes on like that. He imagined a white ball of healing light. Suddenly a pain struck Yoshimitsu in his abdomen. Its whiteness evoked a sense of emptiness. It reminded him of white things he had seen before. Not quite Ivory, but closer to it than it was to Eggshell. It was not white exactly, but it was a kind of white. ![]() He stared at the white wall absentmindedly. An excerpt, from the pages of Parasite Eve: The remainder of the book is an eclectic mix of lectures on the history of mitochondrial evolution, and exhaustive commentaries on the colours of various things. Literally 319½ pages of its 320 page runtime are dedicated entirely to describing, in excruciating detail, the intricacies of advanced medical procedures. In fact, having someone you love read it to you with a cute Aussie accent is its one saving grace, and I can't imagine that's what Hideaki Sena had in mind so I refuse to give him credit for that. This book put me to sleep at least three times, though I had hoped my Australian girlfriend didn't notice. Worse than Caliban Cove, which has now retroactively become a two star book. Let's start at the top with this: This book is the WORST. My god, where do I even begin with this book. When these cells start mutating rapidly, a consciousness bent on determining its own fate awakens from an eonic sleep. Her donated kidney is transplanted into a young girl with a debilitating disorder, but the doctor also feels compelled to keep a small sample of her liver in his laboratory. Nagashima loses his wife in a mysterious car crash, he is overwhelmed with grief but also an eerie sense of purpose he becomes obsessed with the idea that he must reincarnate his dead wife. Parasite Eve was the basis of the hugely popular video game of the same name and has been cinematized in Japan, where the novel’s smashing success helped set off a horror boom that has only been intensifying ever since. New life begins at the cellular level, but when that cell contains restless mitochondria, it will aspire to be much more than just a speck in a petri dish. Filled with scientific acuity and existential challenges in the tradition of Ghost in the Shell and Frankenstein, this medical fantasmagoria is a disorienting look into the consciousness and will have you questioning the future of human evolution. ![]()

![]() Hover your pointer over the green button while pressing the Option key for a few seconds to see a different set of commands that let you move windows to the left or right instead of tiling them-meaning the windows are not taken full-screen but simply shifted to one half of the screen or the other. Strangely, Apple’s help article about Split View makes no mention of a hidden feature in Catalina that gives you additional window-positioning options that don’t invoke full-screen mode. That also happens if you tile one window but no additional windows are available to fill the remaining space. That menu also provides an option to make a single window full-screen. Choose one of those options, and macOS prompts you to select one of the remaining windows to fill the rest of the screen. Hover the pointer over a full-screen button and a menu appears with options to tile the window to the left or the right of the display. In 10.15 Catalina, Apple simplified the interface. More on Magnet and Moom in a bit-let’s look at what macOS can do for you first. Magnet and Moom provide a capability I have envied in Microsoft Windows and Google’s ChromeOS: “window snapping.” When you drag windows to the edges of the screen, window snapping causes them to snap into particular positions and shapes. You can buy Moom for $10 directly from its developer, Many Tricks, or through the Mac App Store. I weaned myself off Magnet and went all-in with Moom because of its flexibility. Last I checked, the $1.99 app sat atop the Mac App Store’s productivity category.Īnother, Moom, lets you customize your window behavior. It was my favorite app of this kind for a long time. One window-positioning utility, Magnet, is a zero-configuration tool that anticipates what presets users want. There are many such apps out there, and even general-purpose utilities like Keyboard Maestro can help you move windows around. Third-party utilities give you even more window control. You’re probably aware of Split View, which puts two windows side-by-side in full-screen mode, and Apple has built in additional capabilities. You can automate such drudgery to a large degree. #1656: Passcode thieves lock iCloud accounts, the apps Adam uses, iPhoto and Aperture library conversion in VenturaĪutomate Window Positioning With macOS and Appsĭon’t squander precious time manually repositioning and resizing Mac windows over and over again.#1657: A deep dive into the innovative Arc Web browser. ![]() #1658: Rapid Security Responses, NYPD and industry standard AirTag news, Apple's Q2 2023 financials. ![]() #1659: Exposure notifications shut down, cookbook subscription service, alarm notification type proposal, Explain XKCD.#1660: OS updates for sports and security, Drobo in bankruptcy, why TidBITS doesn't cover rumors. ![]() ![]() We have the ingredients for a perfect storm there. ![]() These thin comparisons should clue you in to what Superconductor is trying to be. Superconductor even played at times like a comic version of The Mothman Prophecies. The first half of the story reminded me of that Simpsons episode where the town of Springfield is duped into building a shoddy monorail system. That inability to find resolution proves how meaningful Noonian Soong's final moments - when Data earnestly called him "father" - truly were. ![]() Kore and her father may yet make amends before Star Trek: Picard season 2 concludes, but right now, their relationship is craggier than Vasquez Rocks. The struggle she endured adds a deeper layer behind Data's thirst for humanity. The Enterprise-D android honored his cloned predecessor's spirit, and their ancestral link is proven by Data's "Daughter" painting, which depicted a girl who looked exactly like Kore. Kore's Star Trek: Picard story adds a new element to Data's developmental path through Star Trek: The Next Generation. Data's life could've quite easily been as limiting and oppressive as Adam Soong's daughter in 2024, but he roamed freely instead, living exactly the kind of adventures Kore dreamed about. That's the complete opposite of Adam Soong's restrictive attitude toward Kore. Noonian programmed his favorite son to choose his own path, and despite expressing disappointment that Data picked Starfleet over the sciences, Soong wanted Data to experience the outside world and soak up all the emotions and nuances of organic life. For all his sins, that's not the existence Noonian Soong offered Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Soong predecessor has successfully created life (with a helping hand from Q), but has little intention of letting that young bud flourish. Though both doctors were guilty of professional obsession and not always appreciating the life forms they created, Adam keeps Kore caged like a lab rat. There's a coldness to Adam during their confrontation - a lack of empathy as Kore accuses her "father" of valuing her only as a project, not a sentient being.Īnd that's precisely where Star Trek's Soong synergy comes to a stop. Indeed, Kore realizes Adam never intended to release her, healthy or not. 2024's Adam Soong, meanwhile, sought a cure for Kore's condition, but only to complete his science project, not to give his daughter a normal life. Noonian Soong created Data as a newer model whilst neglecting older brother, Lore - a grudge the senior sibling held into Star Trek: The Next Generation. Both also failed as fathers due to their bloody-minded pursuit of scientific perfection. Adam was rejected by his peers and disgraced Noonian's marriage to Juliana ended. Both men were obsessed with their scientific endeavors, pushing human acquaintances away in an unintentionally ironic mission to create realistic human life. Many parallels can be drawn between the mistakes Adam Soong is making here in Star Trek: Picard's past, and the mistakes Noonian Soong will one day make in Star Trek: The Next Generation's future. Related: Picard: Star Trek Has Finally Delivered On First Contact's Borg Tease Kore discovers her true nature in Star Trek: Picard season 2, then rages at the man she previously called father, accusing Adam Soong of loving her only as an experiment - not as a daughter. What doesn't usually happen though is a delay being announced in a game's current release window, and that may cause some fans to sour even more.
